Deus Ex: Human Revolution Review

Genre: Action RPG  Platforms: PC, PS3, Xbox 360

The latest game in the classic Action RPG series, Deus Ex is here. So, does it live up to the other games in the series?

Introduction
So much for reviewing El Shaddai. Oh, well, you can live without it. Maybe I will review it next week. We shall see. Anyway, today I am reviewing the latest game in the classic Action RPG series Deus Ex. There is now three games in the series although Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the first Deus Ex game in 8 years.

Just like it's predecessors, the game blends FPS game elements with RPG features to create an open-ended game with seemly limitless choices on how to achieve your goal making the gameplay similar to the other Deus Ex games. The game is set in a 2027 cyberpunk world, where you can visit about five cities over the course of the game. The player plays as Adam Jenson, a security officer at Sarif Industries, where he is brutally attacked. His body is rebuilt and now he must find his attackers. It sounds cool right? So, is it any good?

The Review
Yes, this game is pretty good. One of Deus Ex: Human Revolution's greatest strengths is the amount of choice given to you. You can complete missions multiple times in different ways and still never do it all. You can talk out your problems, blast guys in the face like a badass, sneak around or hack your way in. The game's cyberpunk futuristic atmosphere is disturbing and dark, but still feels real. Deus Ex's writers are real masters of suspense and mystery as well. The story is original and can definitely keep you guessing what will happen next. The game itself is fairly lengthy, and since there is so many choices and so many secrets to find, you could spend many hours past when you finished the story.

The game does have some short-comings though. The AI is stupid and breaks immersion. It is not uncommon to see a guy just stand there while you blow his face off. The game's boss fights feel like they do not belong because there is no choice: you just shoot the guy and run. Deus Ex: Human Revolution has some technical issues as well, like stiff animations, frame rate issues and loading times that make you want to read "War and Peace" to pass the time. Overall though, it is a great game and highly recommended.

Highlights
The Good: There is lots of different ways to accomplish goals, the futuristic atmosphere is disturbing but still feels real, the story is interesting and keeps you guessing, the game can really immerse you, and it is a long and replayable game.

The Bad: The AI is really stupid, the boss fights don't feel like they belong, and there are some other technical issues.

The Result: I give it 4.5 out of 5.
