No More Heroes: Heroes' Paradise Review

Genre: Action Game  Platform: PS3, Xbox 360

The remake of the Wii exclusive No More Heroes game is here with motion controls. Is it any good?

Introduction
Today, I finally get to review a game. Yea! I was trying to decide between El Shaddai and this, but I decided, since I never played the first No More Heroes games for the Wii, I will review this (I may review El Shaddai next week.) In case you haven't played the first games either, I will explain. The game is a free-roaming, open-ended hack and slash action game in which you, uh, assassinate assassins until you are the top assassin in the world. There are many side missions to do as well, if you get bored of assassinating assassins. The game is very Japanese and very gory, but maintains a Western flair anyway. This game in the series is a HD remake with quite a few changes, including Playstation Move controls. Damn motion controls! So, is it any good?

The Review
Just like Catherine, this game has a very Japanese feel, but this time, the feel is more violent, funny and contemporary, and it feels like a homage to Ninja movies. That means the style is awesome. The HD graphics are colorful and the animations are pretty smooth. The voice acting is great, and manages to not sound too cheesy. The music fits the game's mood perfectly, and helps add to the experience. The hack-and-slash combat is fun, feels great and somehow avoids being too repetitive. There are about 10 bosses if I remember correctly, and not only are they are good challenge to bring down, but they all play differently, so they are not all the same. The controls for the game are also pretty tight, and even the motion controls work pretty well.

There are some graphical glitches like tearing and pop-in, but they can be ignored. Some sound effects repeat too often and sound unnatural. The free-roaming city is empty and small. The city of No More Heroes isn't as big as San Andreas or as lively as Liberty City. The side missions are very repetitive and dull, and can be pretty darn tedious. In other words, the side missions are unnecessary. The other problem with this game, is if you played the original on the Wii, there is not a huge amount of new content here, so I wouldn't buy it. If you haven't played the original however, this is a game that must be played!

Highlights
The Good: The game's overall style is awesome, the graphics and animations are pretty good, the voice acting and music is great, the combat is fun, the controls are tight and all the boss battles are full of variety.

The Bad: There are some graphical glitches, the same sound effects are used too often, the free-roaming city is pretty empty and small, the side missions are pretty repetitive and dull, and the new additions are not enough to buy this if you already played the original on the Wii.

The Result: I give it 3.5 out of 5.
