Gears Of War 3

Genre: Third-Person Shooter  Platform: Xbox 360

One of the most anticipated games of the year is finally out, Gears Of War 3. Was it worth all the weeks of waiting?

I promised I would review Gears of War 3, so here it is. The game has over a million preorders, which is pretty darn amazing. Gears 3 was delayed from a April release to September, so the fans waited a while. The sci-fi TPS (third-person shooter) gameplay is similar to the previous games, but with a few new twists, including new enemies, a 3D-TV option, a new 4-player co-op mode, as well as new weapons, and the new strategic Horde 2.0 mode. Gears 3 also has the classic multiplayer modes as well. The story once again follows Marcus Fenix as he kicks Locust Horde ass, and promises to "answer all the questions about the world". So, was it worth the delays?

The Review
This game is great! It doesn't matter what mode you play as they are all very enjoyable. Horde 2.0's strategic additions add good variety, and I would say that it is one of my favorites. The campaign itself is masterfully written and has lots of exciting drama and action. The environments you traverse while playing Gears 3 are amazingly detailed and fun to explore. The game both looks and sounds great, as you would expect from an AAA game like this. The gore is awesome looking, and the characters look very slick. Hearing the sound of that orchestra really pumps you up to fight, and the sound effects are superb.

The new features really work well, like the new guns and updated modes, and seem to fit in real well. This game overall, has lots of lasting appeal. There are so many modes to play, and medals and achievements to unlock that you could be playing this game for a long time to come.

This game is nearly perfect, so since I couldn't find anything major, I decided to nit-pick. Some modes in this game could use a tutorial or something, because, to new players it may be complicated, and nobody wants to read the instruction manual. (Real men never read manuals!) Also, the game is just generally not that innovative, and is the second, gory, alien shooter to come out this month, although I would say Gears 3 is better than Resistance 3. All in all, buy Gears of War 3! Buy it! Buy it!

Highlights
The Good: All of the modes are great fun, it has a masterfully written campaign, great environments, good visuals and audio, the new features work well, and the game has lots of lasting appeal.

The Bad: Some modes could use a tutorial, and the game is generally not very innovative.

The Result: I give it 4.5 out of 5.
