Jeff Vogel started out with pretty simple beginnings in the earlier 90's, with some of his earlier games like Exile still very "cute" but they are now forshadowed over his later games, which are all RPGs. He is a fan of old-school RPGs and uses shareware to sell them (shareware means that the people who make the games offer a bit of the game for free as a download and you must pay to get the second half.) Put it this way, he is an indie game designer. The amazing part, is that the massive games are made by a group of three people. If you end up buying Avadon, you may be interested in his other games as well. In short, this guy deserves your money for his hard work.

The Review
This game is by far the best looking of Vogel's games yet. He really improved upon the engine in a big way. Need proof? Look at the screenshots. The world is big, lots to explore and do here. This game has real choices and it is fun to rewind and see what would have happened if you chose something (or someone) else. The characters are fleshed out well in these games, and the same is for Avadon. You really want to keep your party alive. While there is not much music, the sound effects draw you into the world anyway. The clanking of swords, the wooshing of the breeze, and just so you know, there is no voice acting. And lastly, unlike hack and slash games like Diablo, there is lots of variety in gameplay. You do more than just fighting or talking.
Some of the best parts of Vogel's games are the stories, but the story for this game just cannot reach his usual level of quality, however, the story is still better than a lot of games these days. The other problem is just the fact that the game is also shorter than his usual games, but make no mistake, you will get 30-40 hours out of it at least.
Avadon is one of Vogel's best looking game to date. |
Highlights
The Good: Best looking of Vogel's games to date, great new game world, lots of role-playing value, the characters are great, the sound effects are high quality and the gameplay is varied enough to not keep you bored.
The Bad: The game is shorter than his other games, and the story isn't quite up to par with his other games.
Result: I give it 4 out of 5.
